A team of scientists on a remote island in Russia has become trapped in a weather station by polar bears, CNN reported Wednesday.
Five polar bears laid siege to the weather station on the island of Vaygach, trapping its three occupants inside and disrupting their normal work routine.
One of the besieged meteorologists described the bears’ behavior as "aggressive," describing how "they began fighting near the house" recently.
The group of humans was armed only with flares, which failed to scare off the ravenous bears. It is unclear if there are plans to rescue the scientists, although the World Wide Fund for Nature in Russia has urged the Russian government to intervene (much like it is doing in Ukraine and Syria).
According to the group Polar Bears International, incidents of polar bears preying on humans are on the rise as sea ice decreases.
