The United States’ oldest known veteran died at the age of 110 Monday.
According to New York Times Washington bureau chief Carolyn Ryan, World War II veteran Emma Didlake has passed away.
Didlake was welcomed to the White House by President Obama last month when the commander and chief commended her for her service.
"We are so grateful that she is here with us today, and it’s a great reminder of not only the sacrifices that a greater generation made on our behalf but also the kind of trailblazing that our women veterans made, African-American veterans who helped to integrate our Armed Services," Obama said in July. "We are very, very proud of them so that’s why we’ve got to make sure we do right by them."
Didlake, an Alabama native, received multiple awards for her service, including the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
After her service, she joined the NAACP and also marched with Martin Luther King, Jr., in Detroit.
