CNN national political reporter Maeve Reston said she was "startled" Tuesday by the enthusiasm gap being faced by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in comparison to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), who is drawing enormous crowds and gaining on Clinton in polling.
"I think the bigger problem for her, more than the size of her events, is the fact that you really are hearing about an enthusiasm gap out there from voters in Iowa and New Hampshire," Reston said. "I was really startled by it when I was in both of those states over the last couple of weeks. There's just a desire for something fresh, and she's not offering it yet in the campaign, and I think that's a really big challenge for her going forward because Bernie is less known and so he's new and people like listening to what he has to say."
Earlier Tuesday, George Stephanopoulos teased an ABC report on the campaign by saying Sanders was "throwing a scare into the Hillary Clinton camp."
