Steven Chu: Energy Department not working to lower prices

The Energy Department isn’t working to lower gasoline prices, Sec. Steven Chu said Wednesday during a House Appropriates subcommittee hearing.

REP. ALAN NUNNELEE: But, is the overall goal to get our price lower?

SEC. STEVEN CHU: No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, to build and strengthen our economy, and to decrease our dependency on oil.

Average gas prices rose Wednesday to $3.73 per gallon nationally. The price of crude oil is up to $106.86, a 31-cent increase since Tuesday.
