AP Reporter Questions State Department on 'Over the Top' Condolences to Iran's President

Associated Press reporter Matt Lee asked the State Department about the numerous statements of condolences to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Last night, President Rouhani’s mother, Sakineh Peivandi, passed away. Peivandi was also the mother of top Iranian negotiator and brother to Rouhani, Hossein Fereydoun. Secretary of State John Kerry offered his personal condolences to Fereydoun amid nuclear talks in Switzerland. The State Department later released a statement offering condolences and then later tweeted the statement.

Lee asked the State Department if they were expecting to receive anything in the nuclear talks with the "over the top" expression of condolences. A spokesperson for the State Department said that they were expressing condolences and not to read anything more into it.
