Ellison's Must Read of the Day

My must read of the day is "Male-female pay gap remains entrenched at White House," in the Washington Post:

The White House has not narrowed the gap between the average pay of male and female employees since President Obama’s first year in office, according to a Washington Post analysis of new salary data.

The average male White House employee currently earns about $88,600, while the average female White House employee earns about $78,400, according to White House data released Tuesday. That is a gap of 13 percent.

In 2009, male employees made an average of about $82,000, compared to an average of $72,700 earned by female employees — also a 13 percent wage gap.

The Washington Free Beacon first criticized President Obama for this pay gap in 2012. There has been plenty of time for the administration to even it out, but they have chosen to maintain the status quo.

Perhaps there are legitimate, non-sexist reasons for this pay gap and for men to hold the majority of senior level positions. Those reasons, however, are irrelevant in this situation because the administration has made equal pay a key platform since Obama first took office, eviscerating Republicans for their lack of support for the platform.

This glaring hypocrisy makes the entire platform seems disingenuous, as if it was always a catchy slogan purely intended to enrage the base and pick up female votes.

Making grand proclamations of injustice while perpetrating that very pattern tends to discredit the initial claims, and rightfully so.
