State Dept: Ukraine Election 'Successful'

Psaki: U.S. Still Considering Sanctions Against Russia for Disrupting Ukraine Elections

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki suggested that the United States may still consider sanctions against Russia over attempted disruptions of Ukraine’s recent elections.

At a briefing this afternoon, Psaki avoided directly answering questions about possible sanctions, but eventually admitted "There were attempts to disrupt in parts of Ukraine. We will look at what that means, and if it means anything in terms of a next round of sanctions."

Psaki maintained, however, that although disruptions occurred, they did not invalidate the elections and "we feel this was a successful election."

Psaki said she had no further announcements, but placed blame on "chaos and violence perpetrated by pro-Russian militants" and said that her department "will continue to have these discussions internally."
