Sean Eldridge, a Democratic candidate for a New York House seat refuses to talk to reporters about his biography, issue stances, illegal campaign contributions, or pretty much anything.
Politico’s Alex Isenstadt tried to interview Eldridge recently about his campaign and his business, but Eldridge’s campaign made it impossible for the candidate to be interviewed. Isenstadt described the wild goose chase to interview Eldridge as "sort of running into a wall."
Isenstadt shared that another reporter told him that Eldridge can come across as "immature." People in the upstate New York district shared similar views, with some revealing to Isenstadt that they have not seen Eldridge. This should not come as a surprise, however, as Elridge only just moved to the district a little over a year ago.
While Eldridge refused to make himself available for an interview or comments, his opponent, Republican Chris Gibson, gladly welcomed reporters’ requests to interview him.
This led Rick Berke, Politico’s Executive Editor to question whether the 27 year old who is running using his husband’s Facebook fortune is actually "ready for prime time."
This exchange is available below:
Rick Berke: So how hard did you really try to talk to Sean Eldridge?
Alex Isenstadt: I tried pretty hard and it was sort of like running into a wall. You know, when I was here in the newsroom, I placed phone calls, I sent emails, I called different members of his team. Each time, I was told, ‘No, no, no, no.’ I go to upstate New York. I go to his business office, the door is locked. I go to his campaign headquarters, the door is locked. So they put up the wall pretty good on this one.
Berke: You were literally locked out?
Isenstadt: I was literally locked out. That is true.
