For the world’s most bountiful nation and sole superpower, we sure are amused with some pretty asinine things. Only in America would we deem March 14th, a unit of time measurement that’s existed for thousands of years, "Pi Day," a mathematical constant beginning with the number’s 3, 1, and 4. We sent a man to the moon, yet we still wish each other "May the Fourth be with you" every May 4th. American Ingenuity, I tell you.
Similarly, Americans have become obsessed with the "Instgram Celebrity." The popular photo-editing social media service can turn even the most composition-challenged yokel (such as myself) into a professional photographer. And since we’re a nation of entrepenurs, some enterprising users have created a whole brand by posting photos of themselves on the Internet.
The leader of the clubhouse Insta-celebs is Jen Selter, a fitness enthusiast who, with the help of hashtags and a dedicated diet and workout regime, has crafted a social media presence almost as perfect as her derrière. For the first time, Jen had her photograph taken by something other than an iPhone in this month's Vanity Fair.
People have gotten rich off of social media before. But Twitter requires the deployment of humor and/or intelligence in under 140 works. Selter, on the other hand, has a thousand of words at her disposal.
I'm a simple man and would rather not have Annie Leibovitz turn Jen into a black-tailed Easter Bunny. I prefer my Jen #belfies in their native habitat.
Why does Jen pop, lock, and drop in gyms, hallways, and park benches?
Selter’s derrière extraordinaire has made her a member of a rapidly rising subset of Instagram stars: young women unafraid to share their deeply bronzed, sculpted figures in neon spandex, who want to share their #fitsperation thanks to #cleaneating, #determination, #cardio, and so much more #hardwork.
That’s right. Selter is here to inspire. When fans recognize her #seltering—posing for her iPhone with a leg raised and buttocks in full focus—on park benches and subway stairways, they tell her she’s inspired them to go to the gym that day. And for that, it’s all worth it.
