CBS: Al Qaeda Is Carving Out a Safe Haven in Syria

Using area to train Americans

CBS homeland security correspondent Bob Orr reported Thursday that Syria has become the new battleground against al Qaeda, with the international terrorist organization using bases in the country to train Western troops, many of them Americans.

"What’s happening in Syria is you have two al Qaeda factions, largely from Iraq, who are carving out safe haven space," Orr said. "They’re setting up training camps and training Western recruits."

Orr also suggested that if their mission was completed in Syria, the Western and American troops would then turn to operations in Iraq or even the United States.
