White House Grilled Over Obamacare Wait Times

October 21, 2013

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney had a difficult time answering questions on Obamacare from reporters during Monday’s White House Briefing.

Fox News' Wendell Goler told Carney that a Fox News producer had called the hotline number Obama announced today on national television and was told by the healthcare representatives that they would send him paper work.

Carney looked shaken up and confused and responded that the wait times for the hotline have been "fairly short" – not at all what Goler asked.

Goler followed up and inquired more about the paperwork the representatives had mentioned. Carney replied that Americans can sign up and register online or on the telephone, once again, not what Goler had asked.

Below is the full exchange:

Q: You went through four ways of dealing with this: on the Web, by phone, in person, by mail. One of our reporters called the number that's now on the website and was told, essentially, we'll send you paperwork in the mail in a couple of weeks. So --

MR. CARNEY: Well, I don't know what the Fox reporter or producer discovered when he or she called. What is true is that wait times have been fairly short on the 1-800 number and that -- and that --

Q: (Off mic) -- talked to a person, and he said, basically, we'll send you the paperwork in the mail.

MR. CARNEY: Look, I think you can -- again, I don't know what experience you guys had. You can enroll over the phone. You can enroll in person. You can be provided an application to sign up and register and to enroll. And what we're making clear today is -- and what the website itself makes clear today is that there are these other avenues to both learn about the Affordable Care Act and the health insurance options available to you in your state and to sign up and to enroll.
