Anthony Fauci, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, and his wife had a combined net worth of more than $11 million when Fauci left his government post last year, according to financial disclosures obtained by Fox News.
The number was reported in Fauci's termination report when he left his job, which was the highest-paid position in the federal government, in December 2022. The couple's net worth increased by nearly $2 million since the beginning of the pandemic, though it decreased between 2021 and 2022, Fox News reported.
"Before his retirement last December, Fauci was the highest-paid federal employee ($480,654) and significantly outearned the president ($400,000)," Adam Andrzejewski, CEO of transparency watchdog OpenTheBooks, told Fox News. "In retirement, we estimate that Fauci is collecting a federal pension, which rivals a presidential salary. It's the largest federal retirement package in history."
The report comes months after it was discovered that Fauci's team worked to hide their communications from disclosure during the pandemic. A former senior aide for Fauci used Gmail instead of his government email to conceal his communications, urging other colleagues to use Gmail to avoid FOIA requests.
