Sanders Disgusted to See Swastika Displayed at His Phoenix Rally

Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) said he was disgusted to see a protester display a Nazi flag at his campaign event on Thursday evening.

"Obviously it is unspeakable, it is disgusting," Sanders told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Sunday. "It is something that, I've got to tell you, I never expected in my life as an American to see a swastika at a major political rally. It's horrible."

The Jewish senator spoke at a campaign rally in Phoenix when the audience started booing a protester waving a Nazi flag. Sanders said he could not see what was on the flag at the time but was told afterward what had taken place.

"The idea that there was a swastika, a symbol of everything that this country stands against," Sanders said. "We lost 400,000 people fighting that symbol, fighting Nazism. Six million Jews were killed, other people were killed. The most devastating war in the history of humanity and that you have in the United States of America, somebody who is an anti-Semite [and] was yelling out vulgar things as well."

The anti-Semitic protester was widely condemned by political leaders and organizations as images of the incident circulated online.
