Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti said Thursday that if Hoda Muthana, an Alabama woman who traveled to Syria and married an Islamic State fighter, wants to return to the United States, there is room in the Guantanamo Bay prison camp for her.
Continetti's comments came during an appearance on Fox News's "Special Report," where he and host Bret Baier discussed Muthana's request to be allowed into the United States.
Muthana, 24, went to Syria when she was 20 and joined ISIS. The Guardian reported that Muthana was "one of ISIS's most prominent online agitators who took to social media to call for the blood of Americans to be spilled." Now Muthana, who married multiple ISIS fighters, claims she made a "big mistake" by leaving the U.S. and was brainwashed online into traveling to Syria. She later fled land controlled by ISIS and was captured by Kurdish forces. She is currently living in al-Hawl refugee camp in northern Syria and wants to return to her family in Alabama.
"We have room in Gitmo," Continetti said, referring to Guantanamo Bay. "And if she's not an American citizen, that's where she should go. If she's a citizen, we can indict her ... So the choice is relatively simple."
Muthana claims that she is an American citizen and that she is ready to face the country's legal system. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, however, said that Muthana is not an American citizen and would not be allowed back in the country.
"I feel like we are looking through the wrong end of the telescope here," Continetti said. "Why are we feeling any sympathy for this woman when ISIS is a genocidal former regime, thank goodness, that murdered women, murdered children, devastated Christians and other religious minorities?"
Before the Islamic State's so-called caliphate collapsed in Iraq and Syria, Muthana encouraged Americans to kill their fellow citizens in the name of the terror group.
"Americans wake up!" Muthana wrote on Twitter in 2015, according to a profile in BuzzFeed News. "Men and women altogether. You have much to do while you live under our greatest enemy, enough of your sleeping! Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them."
