Fifty-eight percent of Americans favor legalizing marijuana, according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday.
Tuesday’s survey is the first time a majority of Americans have supported legalizing marijuana since Gallup began asking the question in 1969, when only 12 percent of respondents favored legalization.
Gallup reports that support for marijuana legalization surged by 10 points over the last 12 months—a banner year for advocacy groups that saw Colorado and Washington become the first states to legalize recreational marijuana use.
Americans 65 and older are the only age group that still opposes legalizing marijuana, while 67 percent of Americans aged 18 to 29 favor it.
The largest increase in support came from independents—jumping from 50 percent to 62 percent—while Republican and Democrat support for marijuana legalization toked up only slightly.
