Trump: Paul Ryan Is Like a 'Fine Wine'

December 14, 2016

President-elect Donald Trump told an audience of supporters Tuesday night in West Allis, Wisconsin that Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) is like a "fine wine" because as time goes by he comes to appreciate the House speaker more.

Trump has been visiting multiple states on his ongoing "Thank You Tour" to thank people who voted for him in the 2016 election. He stopped Tuesday night in Wisconsin, a state that surprised many by going to Trump instead of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"Speaker Paul Ryan, I've really come to–," Trump said.

The audience began to boo and he immediately stopped what he was saying to address the people at the rally.

"Oh no!" he said. "I've come to appreciate him."

The booing died down.

"Speaker Paul Ryan, where is speaker?" he asked as he looked around.

The video of the event then cut to Trump describing his appreciation for Ryan.

"He's like a fine wine," Trump said.

The audience made some noise.

"Every day goes by, I get to appreciate his genius more and more," Trump said.

The relationship between Trump and Ryan was a rocky one during the presidential election.

When Trump attacked a federal judge who was presiding over his Trump University case for his Mexican heritage, Ryan said that his comments were "sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment."

Trump's constant tweeting has also caused some tension in the relationship.

At a press conference over the summer, Ryan appeared angry at a reporter who asked about Trump's tweets. Ryan told the reporter that he was not going to keep commenting on Trump's tweets.

Ryan explained that the two have "patched things up" during a recent interview with CBS's Scott Pelley.

SCOTT PELLEY: You called Donald Trump a racist.

PAUL RYAN: No, I didn't. I said his comment was–

PELLEY: Well, I'm not sure there's a great deal of daylight between those two definitions. But he definitely called you ineffective and disloyal. Have you patched it up?

RYAN: Yeah, we have. We're fine. We're not looking back. We're looking forward. We actually–like I said, we speak about every day. And it's not about looking back in the past. That's behind us. We're way beyond that.
