Sanders, Clinton Supporters Have Testy Exchange Over Fossil Fuel Donations: 'Shame on You'

April 4, 2016

Supporters of both Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) and Hillary Clinton clashed Monday on CNN while discussing donations to Clinton's campaign from the fossil fuel industry.

Former California Democratic Party chairman Bill Press and Neera Tanden, the president and CEO of the Center for American Progress who has also advised Clinton, clashed over how much money Clinton's campaign has received from those in the fossil fuel industry, a long-time nemesis of the Democratic Party.

After Clinton was approached after a rally by a Greenpeace activist who confronted her over the donations, Clinton went on Meet the Press Sunday blaming Sanders and his young supporters for not having all the facts and saying that she felt sorry for them. This and the debate over how much Clinton has actually received became the first point of contention between the Press and Tanden.

"I think it is so condescending and it is insulting to young people and to old people," Press said about Clinton's remarks.

Press then referenced two articles he had with him.

"The facts are two questions. Did Hillary Clinton take money from the fossil fuel industry? Okay, here's an article from the Huffington Post. Hillary Clinton's biggest campaign bundlers are fossil fuel lobbyists," Press said. "How much money did she take? Here's an article from the Center for Responsive Politics, four and a half million dollars.

"Oh, for the love of God, this is totally false," Tanden said.

"Bill, I've gotta jump in there. I just want to set the stage for our viewers and then we should move on," host Poppy Harlow said. "The numbers that are out there are the four and a half million you're talking about comes only from Greenpeace and it talks about lobbyists who work for many, many industries, including the fossil fuel industry to her Super PAC, not to her campaign."

Harlow, Press, and Tanden began talking over each other.

While talking about the possibility of an upcoming debate between Sanders and Clinton in New York, Press and Tanden clashed again.

"We can have a debate about facts, and not the kind of innuendo and errors, and frankly, Bill, I'm a big fan of yours, but, shame on you for providing false facts," Tanden said.

"Wait, wait, wait! What is a false fact? What is a false fact? No, no wait. You're accusing me of telling a false fact," Press said.

"Four and a half million dollars does not come from the fossil fuel industry. It comes from people associated, and lots of other money as well," Tanden said.

Later, Press became upset with Tanden when she interrupted him.

"Pardon me! It is my turn. It is my turn," Press said.
