The White House announced on Tuesday that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert will be the acting under secretary of state for public diplomacy.

The notification comes on the same day President Donald Trump announced Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would leave his post as the nation's top diplomat. Trump has nominated Mike Pompeo, current director of the Central Intelligence Agency, to be the new secretary of state.

Nauert will replace Under Secretary Steve Goldstein, who was fired on Tuesday after he had publicly contradicted the White House regarding how Tillerson was notified that he was being fired.

The State Department confirmed to the Washington Free Beacon that Nauert will continue in her role as spokesperson for the department as well.
