South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R.) has accepted President-elect Donald Trump's offer to be his U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley, 44, considered to be a rising star within the Republican Party, is currently serving her second term as South Carolina's first female and minority governor. She is the daughter of Indian immigrants.
The move is expected to be formally announced Wednesday, the Post and Courier reported, citing multiple sources.
As governor of South Carolina, Haley's main foreign work focused on negotiating with international companies seeking economic development deals and has led several overseas trade missions.
Haley had met with Trump at Trump Tower in New York last Thursday. She has received praise for her calm handling of the Charleston church shooting in June 2015 and the historic flood that followed four months later that same year.
If Haley is confirmed by the Senate, Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster would succeed her as governor. McMaster has served as the state attorney general and is a former U.S. attorney.
During the Republican presidential primary, Haley was friendly with Trump but had voiced her opposition to his divisive rhetoric.
