Former Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich is running to be elected governor of Ohio.

Kucinich, who previously served eight terms in Congress, filed paperwork on Monday with the Ohio Secretary of State to declare his candidacy and name a campaign treasurer, the Springfield News-Sun reports. He joins a field of six other Democratic hopefuls, including Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton of the Akron area, state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O’Neill, former state Rep. Connie Pillich of Cincinnati and former Attorney General Richard Cordray.

Kucinich, 71, ran for his party's presidential nomination in 2004 and 2008 on a progressive platform, which included single-payer health care, free college, legalizing same-sex marriage, and legalizing marijuana.

Since then, these positions have become more mainstream among Democrats, but Kucinich, a former mayor of Cleveland, still makes statements critical of the party.

Before Donald Trump's inauguration, Kucinich said President Barack Obama left the party "out to dry," and more recently Kucinich has criticized Democrats for calling for President Trump's impeachment, saying there isn't a strong case for it.
