Debbie Wasserman Schultz Claims Clinton Didn’t Lie to Congress About Her Emails

'There's certainly a difference of opinion'

July 19, 2016

Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) claimed Tuesday on Fox Business that Hillary Clinton never lied to Congress about her private email server, saying there was a "difference of opinion" on the matter.

Schultz, while giving her talking points that federal investigations revealed Clinton had done nothing wrong with the 2012 Benghazi attacks, was cut short by host Maria Bartiromo, who cited FBI Director James Comey’s report on the Clinton email investigation. Comey recommended no charges be brought against Clinton, but his words showed that Clinton gave false information about several facets of her private server.

"Now, the trustworthiness obviously has been an issue for Hillary Clinton," Bartiromo said. "She did lie to Congress when she said that she sent all the emails. We know that 30,000 emails—Jim Comey told us that she in fact lied to Congress, so that’s one issue."

One of Comey’s most damning revelations was that the FBI had discovered emails Clinton did not turn over to the State Department, saying, "The FBI also discovered several thousand work-related emails that were not in the group of 30,000 that were returned by Secretary Clinton to State in 2014." Clinton testified on Oct. 22 that she had turned over all of her work-related emails.

Schultz balked at Bartiromo’s comments.

"First of all, she did not lie to Congress," Schultz said. "She released 55,000 pages of emails and has been utterly transparent."

"Jim Comey said she didn’t release them all," Bartiromo said.

"Well, there’s certainly a difference of opinion, but that doesn’t certainly lead to declaring, as you just did, that there was a pattern of, uh, factual inaccuracies," Schultz said.

Clinton also told Congress that she had no classified information on her server, as she said in numerous interviews before and after her testimony. Comey appeared to refute Clinton’s statement, saying the FBI investigation revealed 110 emails in 52 separate chains on her email system that contained classified material.

Schultz, who Bernie Sanders supporters lambasted and accused of rigging the Democratic primary, called Clinton the most admired woman in the world on Monday.
