Rep. Elijah Cummings (D., Md.) is currently hospitalized at Johns Hopkins Hospital for a bacterial infection in his knee, according to a statement from his office.
Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has had several health-related setbacks since last year. His spokesperson said, however, that doctors drained his knee in a minor procedure and he is expected to make a full recovery, Politico reported.
"Doctors drained the infection in a minor procedure today. He is resting comfortably and expects a full recovery," his office said Friday.
Shortly before Politico reported on Cummings being hospitalized, his wife, Democratic policy consultant Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, suspended her gubernatorial campaign in Maryland. She cited personal issues, but did not elaborate.
"Making a positive and direct contribution to the state of Maryland and to our nation was my greatest motivating factor for stepping into the public arena. Unfortunately, due to personal considerations, I am suspending my bid for governor of Maryland," she said in an email to supporters.
Multiple sources said her decision to leave the race revolved around her husband’s health issues, and Democratic aides witnessed Cummings moving around more slowly before Christmas break, according to Politico.
Despite early successes in the race and the support of her husband, Rockeymoore Cummings wasn't the irrefutable front-runner in the primary. In early polling, she trailed fellow Democratic primary candidates, including former NAACP President Ben Jealous and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker.
