President Obama’s performance in handling the Islamic State is dragging down his favorability rating.
"They can’t be happy about these numbers here at the White House," CNN’s senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta said. "After the president’s poll numbers were approaching that coveted 50 percent range earlier this year, public satisfaction is sliding once again."
A majority of Americans said they do not believe Obama has managed the U.S. economy well, which they view as the most important issue the country faces.
Two-thirds of Americans disapprove of Obama’s strategy, or lack thereof, to "degrade and ultimately destroy" IS. Only 32 percent of Americans favor the president’s actions, compared to 63 percent who said they believe the president is failing in the fight against the terrorist group.
Obama fares even worse with government surveillance of U.S. citizens. A whopping 67 percent disapprove of Obama’s actions with the NSA.
"Those are abysmal numbers," Acosta said.
The most unwelcome news for the lame duck president: Obama is now far behind his predecessor, who he has used as a punching bag the last decade.
George W. Bush now enjoys a 52 percent approval with a 9-point positive favorability rating.
