After nearly six years since Bowe Bergdahl walked off his outpost in Afghanistan during wartime desertion and endangering fellow soldiers charges announced Wednesday.
The maximum penalty Bergdahl could receive is life in a military prison.
Josh Korder, a former sergeant that served with Bergdahl, said Bergdahl is lucky that the military is not talking about a death penalty for him. Multiple US soldiers had lost their lives looking for Bergdahl while the Taliban was holding him captive.
In May 2014 Bergdahl was released in a controversial prisoner swap that included five high-ranking Taliban members. One of the prisoners from the swap recently tried to rejoin the fight in Afghanistan but was stopped.
An official told NBC News that Bergdahl would likely be offered a plea deal to avoid military jail time.
