Director of National Intelligence James Clapper Resigns

November 17, 2016

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper submitted his letter of resignation to the House Select Committee on Intelligence on Wednesday night, he said Thursday morning.

"[I] submitted my letter of resignation last night, which felt pretty good," Clapper told the committee, CNN reported. "I have 64 days left and I'd have a pretty hard time with my wife going past that."

Clapper is a retired lieutenant general of the U.S. Air Force. He was nominated in June 2010 by President Obama to replace Dennis Blair as the nation's top intelligence official. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate in August of that year.

Clapper was set to testify before the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday about cooperation between intelligence sources within the government and the Department of Defense.

Clapper was the fourth director of national intelligence, not including David Gompert, who served as the acting intelligence chief for less than three months before Clapper took over the post.

All officials in an outgoing presidential administration are required to resign at some point, CNN noted.
