The World Wildlife Fund in Australia strapped a GoPro on a sea turtle and let it loose. The endangered species gave a breathtaking sea turtle view of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
The beautiful and calming four-minute video shows a variety of tropical fish and rows of colorful coral from the view of the gentle creature.
The Australian chapter of the conservation organization released the video last Monday leading up to the World Heritage Committee’s vote. The video was to draw attention and to put Australia on probation until the health of the reef improves.
The Great Barrier Reef has been dying off for years for multiple reasons; WWF says the irreversible damage is due in large part to global climate change. The sea turtle is listed as endangered but not due to the declining condition of the reef.
On Wednesday, the World Heritage Site committee voted to place Australia on probation and gave a timeline of expectations for the health improvements of the reef. The Australian government has until 2016 to show improvement in protecting the reef and has until 2019 to show that a decline in the reef has stopped completely.
