President Donald Trump on Friday responded to a shooting at a Texas high school by saying "everyone must work together" to keep America's children safe from gun violence.
Trump began the White House criminal justice reform summit by reflecting on a Friday morning shooting in Sante Fe, Texas by expressing his condolences to the families who lost loved ones.
Several law enforcement sources told NBC News that at least nine people were killed in the shooting, but they cautioned that the number could change. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the majority of casualties were students at the high school.
"We grieve for the terrible loss of life and send our support and love to everyone affected by this absolutely horrific attack," Trump said. "To the students, families, teachers, and personnel at Santa Fe High, we are with you in this tragic hour, and we will be with you forever. My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools, and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others."
He went on to say that everyone at every level of government should work together to prevent future shootings.
"May God heal the injured. And may God comfort the wounded. And may God be with the victims and with the victims' families," Trump said. "Very sad day. Very very sad."
