A forceful earthquake with a 7.1-magnitude struck southern Japan Friday, leading officials to issue a tsunami advisory, the Associated Press reported.

The earthquake hit near Kumamato at 1:25 a.m. local time. The magnitude of the earthquake has since been raised to 7.4, according to reports.

The quake struck less than 24 hours after a 6.4 magnitude tremor hit the same area, killing 9 people and leaving more than 800 others injured.
