Rep. Phil Roe (R., Tenn.) is planning to introduce legislation next year that would remove individuals from public housing if they make too much money, WJHL.com reported.

"This summer a federal audit, sparked by our findings, uncovered 25,000 overincome families living in public housing nationwide making up to a million dollars," states the article. "The draft would require overincome families to move out of public housing if they’ve made 125 percent over the median area income for at least a year."

The congressman says that there are 500,000 low-income people who need emergency housing and are on waiting lists. He says it’s unfair that these people have to wait while there are those making high salaries already in public housing.

"They don’t need to be in subsidized housing that you and me and the taxpayers are paying for," Roe said. "If they put these high income people out and replace them with low income people they get less money to run their shop. I’m sorry, but that’s what it’s set up to do, to help low-income people."

Roe plans to meet with Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) to explain how the legislation could help her city of Los Angeles.
