White House Wishes Infant a Happy 101st Birthday

September 18, 2015

A family in West Jordan, Utah expected to receive a very special birthday greeting from the White House but the greeting they received left them wondering, NBC News reported Friday.

The Shosted family received a birthday greeting from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama wishing their son, Benjamin, a happy 101st birthday. One problem: Benjamin is turning one year old. The Shosted family has received birthday greetings for each of their other children, although the previous came from President George W. Bush.

"This one actually looks signed," Kevin Shosted said.

"You can kind of see the marks on the back where the rest of them look more computer-generated," Camille Shosted said.

Personalized greetings from the White House range from birthdays to weddings, and wedding anniversaries for those celebrating 50 years or more. The greetings take six weeks to process and for baby's birthday greetings the letter is sent out after the event.

NBC News reported:

"Dear Benjamin: Happy 101st birthday!" read the note, which was printed on official White House letterhead and bore the president's and first lady's signatures on the bottom.

The letter went on to call Benjamin, who is the youngest of the Shosted's four children, an "integral part of the American narrative" who has "witnessed the best of what our Nation can accomplish when we work together."

Kevin joked that the family is still waiting to collect his social security checks and see the White House flub as sign that their son will live 100 more years.

Camille also joked that their newborn son could possibly be the real life "Benjamin Button." The Shosteds are wondering if there is another Benjamin out in the world who received a birthday greeting welcoming them to the world.
