A vegan activist with the group Direct Action Everywhere was featured in a viral video in which she chastises a group of restaurant-goers for eating chicken.
The video, titled #DisruptSpeciesism, has garnered more than half a million views since it was posted at the beginning of the month.
It even caught the attention of Glenn Beck, who mocked the woman's pleas for people to think of her pet chicken Snow the next time they sit down to eat meat.
"Every time I see chicken on the plate, my family and I will joke about Snow," Beck said.
In response, Direct Action Everywhere released a video profile of Snow the chicken. In the video the activist, dubbed "the chicken lady" by Beck, describes how "talkative" Snow is, compared her to a pet dog, and declared that chickens "are just like us."
"Our goal is to create a world where every animal--dog, cat, human, or, yes, chicken--is safe, happy, and free," Direct Action Everywhere organizer Wayne Hsiung said.
"We use the latest technology and most innovative research to create empowered networks for activism, similar to powerful networks for social change that have sprung up in historical movements, e.g. the SCLC," he said. "Our international network--which has people from all walks of life, all nations and continents, and all cultures and creeds--springs into action with monthly days of action."
Hsiung said the group is focused on "changing communities and culture" and not government action.
"Each month, we use creative nonviolent direct action to put the rights of animals into public debate."
When asked whether the group was a serious organization, he said, "Empathy for animals is everywhere. And Americans are routinely outraged by violence against certain species, such as cats and dogs. Americans see that violence as a serious cause. We are simply transforming the existing empathy of the public into a serious movement for change."
No word on whether the chicken lady is a hoax.
