Democratic Senate hopeful Alison Lundergan Grimes has sought to distance herself from the Obama administration’s War on Coal in her race to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) in coal-friendly Kentucky.

"I disagree with the president and his philosophies in terms of coal," Grimes has said. "I stand by the 15,000 men and women who are employed here in the state of Kentucky."

It’s a prudent political move, but does Grimes really mean it? Or is she just saying that to get elected? In any event, Grimes is likely to discuss the issue in a more candid fashion at an April 30 fundraiser in Washington, D.C., hosted by Patrick Murphy.

The "special guest" of the evening will be Senator Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio), a liberal lawmaker who denies the overwhelming scientific evidence that the War on Coal is real.

"There is no war on coal. Period," Brown said during a 2012 debate, dismissing the War on Coal as mere conservative "talking points," despite a robust academic consensus to the contrary.

Tickets start at $500.

CORRECTION: This post originally identified the host of the fundraiser as Representative Patrick Murphy (D., Fla.). The actual host is a different Patrick Murphy who is not a congressman.
