As Republican lawmakers in Congress push to defund Planned Parenthood for allegedly selling the body parts of aborted babies, a majority of U.S. adults oppose abortion under all or most circumstances.
A CNN/ORC poll released Monday indicates that 58 percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal under most circumstances, with 40 percent saying it should be legal in only a few cases and 18 percent believing it should be illegal in all circumstances.
Meanwhile, only 39 percent of American adults think abortion should be legal under most circumstances, a figure that combines the 13 percent who say it should be legal in most cases and the 26 percent believing it should be legal under all circumstances.
The survey, conducted between Sept. 4 and 8, indicates that the share of those saying abortion should be legal in all circumstances has declined by four points in under a month, while the percentage of those saying it should be legal in just a few circumstances has inched upwards.
Republicans in Congress are pushing to defund Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, after multiple videos published by the nonprofit Center for Medical Progress have shown officials from the organization discussing the sale of aborted baby body parts.
The pro-life group released the tenth video in its Planned Parenthood series Tuesday, which appears to show senior officials at the organization discussing its harvesting of fetal parts.
Four congressional committees and several states are currently investigating Planned Parenthood.
