WHCD Comedian Jokes About Trump Abstaining From Alcohol; Trump's Brother Died From Alcoholism

May 1, 2017

Comedian Hasan Minhaj took multiple shots at President Trump during Saturday night's White House Correspondents' dinner for his abstention from consuming alcohol.

"I love that everybody's drinking [and] having a good time. This is beautiful," "The Daily Show" correspondent told hundreds of journalists wining and dining inside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton. "You know Donald Trump doesn't drink, right?"

Minhaj remarked that Trump's abstention is "oddly respectable," but then he joked that "every statement, every interview, every tweet [is] completely sober. How is that possible?"

He continued his joke by implying that Trump's sobriety leaves him without an alibi for his controversial statements.

"We've all had that excuse, haven't we?" the comedian asked the audience. "We've been like, 'I said what? No, listen babe, I swear to you I was hammered, that's not who I really am.' What does Donald Trump tell Melania? 'Listen babe, last year on that bus with Billy Bush, that's exactly who I am.'"

It is unclear whether Minhaj knew why Trump does not drink alcohol, but the president has been candid about the issue. Trump has publicly talked about his older brother Fred's struggle with alcoholism and how it ultimately killed him when he was 42 years old.

Fox News aired a special hosted by TMZ's founder Harvey Levin last November during which Trump talked about his older brother's alcoholism.

"I have never had a drink because of my brother, " Trump said. "If you don't start, you're never going to have a problem. If you do start, you might have a problem and it's a tough problem to stop."
