Rick Scott: Mentally Ill Individuals 'Should Not Have Access to a Gun'

February 15, 2018

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R.) responded to Wednesday's deadly school shooting, saying the conversation going forward needs to acknowledge that mentally ill individuals "should not have access to guns."

Scott participated in a press conference on Thursday where he discussed what his priorities will be in upcoming conversations with state leaders.

"We've got to think about this: if somebody's mentally ill, they should not have access to a gun," Scott said.

The governor also talked about wanting to focus on school safety, specifically looking at funding and mental health.

"All of us have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews; none of us want anything like this to happen again," Scott said.

The comments came in the wake of a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left at least 17 dead and 15 wounded. Authorities have charged Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student who had been expelled for disciplinary reasons, with carrying out the shooting.
