President Donald Trump called the husband of the Orlando police officer who was fatally shot outside a Walmart store earlier this month, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has confirmed.
Bondi described the Wednesday phone exchange between Trump and the spouse of Lt. Debra Clayton as "a brief, very touching, private conversation," Click Orlando reported.
Clayton was gunned down in a Walmart parking lot on Jan. 9. An autopsy report released last week suggested Clayton was on her back when she was shot four times and killed, according to the Associated Press.
Surveillance outside of the Orlando store showed Clayton pursuing suspected gunman Markeith Loyd when she was shot. Loyd was already wanted by authorities for fatally shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend.
Police arrested Loyd late Tuesday at an abandoned home in Orlando. The suspect attempted to escape through the back door before he moved to the front door wearing body armor and carrying two handguns.
Loyd, 41, will be charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, and two counts of aggravated assault of a firearm, among other charges, according to Orland County Sheriff Jerry Demings. His first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
