A new poll shows that more Americans identify with the Republican Party following the midterm elections, Politico reports.

The poll, conducted by Gallup, found that 42 percent of those surveyed identify with the Republican Party after the midterm elections, compared to 39 percent who identified with the GOP prior to the elections.

Additionally, Democrats have lost support. Forty-one percent said they identify as a Democrat following the midterms, compared with 43 percent who identified with the Democrats before the elections.

According to Politico, a similar shift was seen in 1994 and 2002, when Republicans gained advantages in Congress.
