Mike Murphy: Democrats Heading For Own Meltdown

'In New York, with Bill de Blasio as Trotsky would say, too much!'

October 16, 2013

Republican strategist Mike Murphy said Wednesday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that both parties will encounter a period of crisis during the upcoming election cycles, but Democrats should be concerned about swaying too far to the left.

"If you look at the Democratic Party, it is lurching lefter, lefter, and lefter. In New York, with Bill de Blasio as Trotsky would say, too much! He's a good guy but he is no centrist Democrat," Murphy said.

Below is the full exchange:

MIKE MURPHY: Right I’m hearing the same thing. I look at 2016 and I see a party, a Republican party that's going to be in crisis for reasons like that but we have a path forward. If you look at this data this is a bunch of voters, we can win in 2016. If we get creative and we go get to a larger percentage.

Simultaneously, I believe the Democrats are headed for their own meltdown, because while the dogma on the populous right of the Republican Party is getting all the press, we seem to have a knack for it. If you look at the Democratic Party, it is lurching lefter, lefter, and lefter.

In New York, with Bill de Blasio as Trotsky would say, too much! He's a good guy but he is no centrist Democrat. So in 2016, I think you will see the wings of both parties driving politics that will increasingly alienate these voters in the New American Survey who are the key to winning the presidency.
