MSNBC: Hillary Clinton Is No Longer Guaranteed A New York Win After Last Night

April 6, 2016

MSNBC panelist John Heilemann said that after losing in Wisconsin, Hillary Clinton now does not have a guarantee to win her adopted state of New York.

Clinton served New York in the U.S. Senate for eight years before joining the State Department. The prospect of dropping a state where she started was the heavy favorite would constitute another embarrassing loss as she tries to halt Sanders' momentum.

"For the next two weeks, Hillary Clinton in a state where she is not guaranteed of winning this state, her home state," Heilemann said. "There is going to be an extraordinary amount of focus on this race and Hillary Clinton's weaknesses and why it's taking her so long to put away the 74-year-old socialist."

Heilemann said that there will be an intense focus New York as it is the home of the national media.

Tuesday evening, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) scored a double-digit win over Clinton in Wisconsin's primary.

"Do not tell Secretary Clinton — she’s getting a little nervous," Sanders said in his victory speech. "But I believe we’ve got an excellent chance to win New York and a lot of delegates in that state."

Heilemann said that if Sanders had lost last night then members of the Democratic Party would begin to tell him to get out of the race.

Morning Joe panelist Mike Barnicle said that the race was between "yesterday Hillary Clinton and tomorrow Bernie Sanders."

She has struggled to fill the enthusiasm gap since the beginning of her campaign, as she has tried to reach out to the young female voters in particular that are attracted to Sanders and his populist message.

She left Wisconsin early to focus her energy on New York but kept her husband, Bill Clinton, there to campaign for her.

New York has its primary on April 19.
