Haley: We Won't Do Anything to North Korea Unless They Give Us a Reason

April 24, 2017

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley clarified on Monday that America does not intend to strike North Korea unless provoked.

"Today Show" co-hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie asked Haley if she believes tough rhetoric could push North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to make a "catastrophic mistake."

"No, and I think if you look at what is happening now, if there's a catastrophic mistake, it's going to be because he's just continuing to try and instigate an issue. We're going to continue to be stable, we're going to continue to have the international community stable," Haley said.

Guthrie asked Haley whether the United States would consider taking military action against North Korea.

"Is a preemptive strike against North Korea really being considered? Is the administration actively planning for that?" Guthrie asked.

"We are not going to do anything unless he gives us reason to do something," Haley said.

Haley said these reasons could include attacks on military bases and continued missile testings.

Lauer pushed Haley, asking, "If he tests another intercontinental ballistic missile, if he were to test another nuclear device. When you say obviously we're going to do that, do you mean military retaliation?"

Haley concluded the conversation by deferring to President Donald Trump.

"I think the president steps in and decides what's going to happen," she said.
