The 41st president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, and his wife, Barbara Bush, have both been hospitalized in Houston, Texas.

The former president was admitted to the Texas Medical Center for pneumonia and Barbara Bush was admitted on Wednesday morning as a precautionary measure after experiencing coughing and fatigue.

H.W. Bush, 92, first arrived at the Houston Methodist Hospital, which is part of the Texas Medical Center, on Saturday after he experienced a shortness of breath. He is now in the Intensive Care Unit for "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia,"ABC 13 in Houston reported.

Doctors had to perform a procedure on the former president to open up his airways that involved sedation.

Barbara Bush, 91, the former first lady, was hospitalized as a precaution because of her exposure to pneumonia from her husband.

The former president is currently still admitted for observation.

"President George H. W. Bush was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital as a precaution after experiencing shortness of breath," Jim McGrath, a spokesperson for Bush, said. "The former president, 92, is being monitored and is resting comfortably."

H.W. has been admitted to the hospital three times since 2014.
