Wisconsin Democratic Senate candidate Russ Feingold is set to attend a fundraiser Monday night in Massachusetts hosted by former Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis.
America Rising issued a press release today hitting Feingold, who lost his Senate seat in 2010 to Republican Ron Johnson, for joining forces with the "epically failed" 1988 Democratic presidential nominee who lost the general election in a landslide.
"This evening, failed former Senator and California college professor Russ Feingold will be in Massachusetts, fundraising with failed former presidential candidate and California college professor Michael Dukakis," America Rising writes.
"In 1988, Dukakis was absolutely trounced in the presidential election, losing the presidential election by 7 million votes and enduring a 426-111 electoral college drubbing," the group continues. "Throughout the election, Dukakis was attacked for being weak on national defense and posed in an army tank to make himself seem strong on the issue. The photo disastrously backfired and reinforced Dukakis’ weakness on defense issues."
The group further elaborates by mentioning votes Feingold cast during his 18-year tenure in Washington.
While serving in the Senate, Feingold voted against both the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and also against legislation that would allow the government to greater track lone wolf terrorists. Feingold was additionally the only senator from either political party to vote against the Patriot Act following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
"Feingold and Dukakis also stand together in their dogged support of closing Guantanamo Bay prison and bringing detainees to the United States. Dukakis said in an interview that he "does not understand the reluctance to incarcerate these people in the United States," while Feingold has taken multiple votes against prohibiting the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to the U.S and penned an op-ed urging President Obama to use his executive authority to close the prison."
"The fact that Feingold’s foreign policy positions line up with someone as far-left as Michael Dukakis may make the liberal academic crowd in California happy, but it’s clear that their views will make America less safe and that is bad news for Wisconsin," America Rising concludes.
