Several Democrats running for Congress in Arizona's second congressional district indicated over the weekend that they would oppose House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D., Calif.) bid for speaker of the House.
The Six Democratic candidates in the district participated in a forum in which the moderator at one point asked whether they would support Pelosi for speaker, according to video caught by America Rising PAC.
"Now it is time for a lightning round," the moderator said. "We're gonna ask you some very quick questions, and rather than take a long time to talk about it, if you're answering yes to the question just raise your hand up high."
"Will you support Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House?" the moderator asked.
None of the candidates raised their hands, leading the audience to applaud and cheer.
Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D, Ariz.), the front-runner in the race, joined the other candidates in not raising her hand, appearing to reverse her prior support for Pelosi, the Daily Caller noted. Kirkpatrick voted for Pelosi for speaker on four previous occasions.
Kirkpatrick's staff later clarified that she would remain a supporter of Pelosi and had misunderstood how to respond to the question with a raised hand.
Opposition to Pelosi's leadership has become more common among liberal activists and House Democrats; it has also become an issue for Democrats running in competitive districts.
Conor Lamb, the Democratic candidate for the special election in Pennsylvania's 18th congressional district, made an ad declaring he would not support Pelosi to lead House Democrats if elected.
