Democratic State Assemblyman Found Guilty on Bribery Charges

New York state assemblyman Eric Stevenson, a two-term Democrat, was found guilty of four bribery-related counts on Monday.

A jury took only 90 minutes to find the Bronx assemblyman guilty of taking bribes worth $22,000 to write legislation that eliminated competition for Russian adult day-care center developers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The verdict followed a trial that started last week, in which it was alleged that Mr. Stevenson, a second-term Assembly member representing the Bronx's 79th District, took four separate bribes totaling $22,000 between July 2012 and last February.

Manhattan federal court judge Loretta Preska set sentencing for May 20. The charges are punishable by a combined total of 55 years, though it is likely he will receive a substantially lower sentence.

As he exited the courthouse, the 47-year-old Mr. Stevenson said, "I'm fine and I'll accept God's will."

"Right now, at this point in time, I just want to reserve my thoughts and my feelings," he said. But he added, "I don't feel down. We'll see what the future brings."
