D.C. Bans Swearing after Marion Barry confrontation

February 21, 2012

The Washington Times reports that the D.C. City Council unanimously passed a ban on profane and abusive language after longtime Democratic Councilman Marion Barry engaged in a confrontation with a fellow council member on Feb. 14. According to the Times:

Mr. Barry, a Ward 8 Democrat with a long and checkered political history, got into the argument Feb. 14 with fellow Council member David Catania, a Republican turned independent.

Mr. Catania cursed at Mr. Barry during the Valentine's Day blowup and called him a "despicable human being," according to the only reporter in the room during a day of public-private government meetings.

Mr. Barry, who is black, accused Mr. Catania of having a long-standing disrespect for "black men."
