Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Matthew Continetti explained President Donald Trump's recent attacks on the press Sunday by saying the president may feel "liberated."
MSNBC's "Meet the Press Daily" host Chuck Todd began the panel discussion by asking what's behind Trump's increased attacks on the media. Todd suggested the president seems rattled.
NBC reporter Heidi Przybyla said "the simple answer is that the day of reckoning" where Trump may be interviewed by Robert Mueller is approaching.
She further commented it was notable Trump's top national security advisers felt the need to come out with a show of unity this week at a press briefing without having anything new to share.
"Seriously or literally, Matthew?" Todd asked of how much Trump feels threatened.
"It's funny, serious or literally, threatened? I kind of think Trump feels liberated," Continetti argued.
"He's totally detached from his own administration now?" Todd asked.
"Yeah. You look at the pace of his travel to these states. He's listening to his outside advisers now," Continetti said.
Trump has held two rallies this week alone, one in Florida for Rep. Ron DeSantis' (R.) bid for governor and one for Pennsylvania Rep. Lou Barletta's (R.) Senate campaign.
"The original campaign crew now has his ear. I think he feels that he is going to go back to basics, back to the original program which got him to where he was in the White House. So, sure, he's feeling the heat legally. He's thinking about Mueller. But he's also feeling liberated and that's why he wants to maintain that connection with his devoted base," Continetti said.
