Commander in Afghanistan Hopeful Following Anti-Taliban Attack

A Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan is facing an uprising by the local population, according to the commander of U.S. forces in southern Afghanistan.

"It's not been very well reported in the media, but I'll be happy to tell you today, there has been an uprising that started in Panjwai district about three and a half weeks ago," Army Maj. Gen. Robert Adams said Wednesday.

The Panjawi district has seen intense fighting between taliban fighters and NATO forces.

NATO troops have never been able to gain full control of Panjawi due to strong loyalty by the local population to the taliban, but those feelings have recently changed due to a beating of a villager by Taliban fighters.

"In short the people have said enough is enough and become fed up with the Taliban," he said.

Abrams said he is hopeful the anti-Taliban sentiment will spread.
