Chris Matthews: 'We Were Rooting For Castro' Before He Turned Red

While on Hardball Wednesday, Chris Matthews expressed his disappointment in Fidel Castro, particularly Castro’s failure to establish a Liberal Democracy in Cuba after fighting against Fulgencio Batista’s regime.

Speaking to guest Al Cardenas, Chairman of the American Conservative Union and a Cuban-American, Matthews showed his disillusion with Castro and what he promised.

"I never liked him, he betrayed your revolution in Cuba," Matthews said. "We all as kids thought he was a Liberal Democrat. That’s what he said he was when he came in his pajamas in New York to the UN. We were rooting for him against Batista, like a lot of you folks were in Cuba, and he turned out to be a red."

Matthews blasted Castro for selling out on his principles, and aligning with the Soviet Union and its repressive policies.
