Government accountability organization Cause of Action has requested a grand jury investigation into the IRS for singling out organizations based on their political views.
The request comes after an IRS official admitted some organizations, such as those which used the words "tea party" or "patriot" on their forms, were more closely scrutinized than others.
"By targeting particular groups’ tax-exempt applications, IRS employees may have engaged in a conspiracy against rights and therefore subject to criminal liability," Cause of Action wrote in its letter to U.S. attorney Kerry Harvey.
