Sen. Robert Menendez (D., N.J.) is not having a good year. The problems stem from his relationship with a controversial donor, South Florida doctor Salomon R. Melgen. The Senate Ethics Committee is now "reviewing" that relationship, the New York Times has called for Menendez to relinquish his perch atop the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, and major news outlets are looking into whether Melgen may have traded donations for favors, despite Menendez's insistence that the entire controversy is the work of "right-wing" critics.
